Edwin John Fisher was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to a Russian Jewish immigrant couple Gitte, a.k.a. Katherine or “Katie and Joseph Tisch. Subsequently, his father’s surname was changed from Tisch to Fisher by the census of 1940. He was fourth in number out of seven kids in the family.
Fisher’s talent as a singer was uncovered at a very young age and he would win numerous amateur competitions. He dropped out of high school to pursue a singing career after he had become a local superstar.
Fisher’s had been in fame not only for his profession but also for him five marriages. He had four children from two of his wives. He married Debbie Reynolds in 1955 and had two kids with her- Carrie Fisher and Todd Fisher. Their marriage lasted only for five years, after which he married British-American actress, Elizabeth Taylor with whom again it lasted for five years. He had two more kids- Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher with his third wife Connie Stevens.
Fisher, at the age of four, won his first competition following which, he entered every amateur contest. He made his professional debut at the age of 12 on a local radio of Philadelphia- WFIL and performed for radio shows. His first ever hit was “Thinking of You.”
In 1951, Fisher was selected by the U.S. Army, where he was an official vocalist for the United States Army Band. Two years later, in 1953 he sang in popular nightclubs and in different television-series, out of which the most hyped was Coke Time with Eddie Fisher for next four years.
