Coolio’s real name is Artis Leon Ivey, Jr., who was born on August 1, 1963, in Compton, California. His father, Artis Leon Ivey Sr. was a carpenter and his mother Jacki Slater was a factory worker. He comes from a broken home where his parents got divorced when he was just 11. While in school he joined a street gang, Baby Crips and created menace in school.
He attended Compton Community College where he picked up his high-school interest in rap. When he was 17, he was jailed for numerous months corresponding to a money theft. Coolio also picked up crack cocaine addiction for which he went to rehabilitation. In order to dissuade from addiction, he did different odd jobs while getting back to his music career.
Coolio has a brother, Malieek Straughter, who is also an actor. He dated Josefa Salinas in 1987 and married after nine years in 1996. They have four children together Artisha, Brandi, Artis, and Jackie. The couple later divorced in 2000.
