Jesse Louise Jackson Sr. was born on 8 October 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina, United States of America. He attended the Sterling high school and then went to the University of Illinois, from where he then transferred to the A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
It was then that he became active in local civil rights protests against segregated theatres, libraries, and restaurants. He graduated with a B.S. in Sociology, and in 1966 started focussing full-time on the Civil Rights Movement.
He first started commanding attention when he began to work for Martin Luther King Jr. It was while working within Martin Luther King Jr.’s SCLC that he rose to prominence. He has actively been involved in civil rights activism movements and has participated or played a role in these movements.
Jackson played a role in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and headed the Chicago branch of SCLC’s economic arm called the Operation Breadbasket. He was later promoted to national director. He worked with Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s poor people’s crusade in Washington DC.
In December 1971, the Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) began and was later renamed by Jackson to People United to Serve Humanity. In the year 1984, he resigned from his post as president of PUSH and became the candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination. In the same year, he organized the Rainbow Coalition. In the year 1996, however, the two organizations (PUSH and Rainbow Coalition) were merged.
His international roles include working independently to secure the release of the prisoners held by anti-American regimes. He worked to free hostages during the 1990s before the Persian Gulf War, and also the release of three US soldiers during the Kosovo conflict.
