Mos Def was born on December 11, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States. he was born to Abdullah Rahman and Sheron Smith. He is the elders of 12 children including stepchildren. He was raised in Brooklyn. He stayed with his mom, his dad lived in New Jersey.
He attended the Philippa Schuyler Middle School 383, Bushwick, Brooklyn. He, however, dropped out of high school in his sophomore year. He witnessed his own brother, Dennard Smith, get knocked down by a car. This mentioned that this incident was a traumatic experience for him.
