Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. was born on March 13, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. His father, Lonnie Lynn “Pops” was a basketball player but he died in 2014, and his mother Mahalia Ann Hines is an educator. Common’s parents got divorced when he was around 6, in 1978.
